Oberammergau Passion Play
The Oberammergau Passion Play
Don't miss this once in a lifetime event! Performed only once every 10 years!
A small beautiful village in Oberammergau, Germany, is famous around the work for the wonderful Passion Play their local perform just once every 10 years. In 1634, Europe's population was decimated by the Black Death. Oberammergau was unaffected, until a homesick villager wandered home one night, bringing the dreaded plague with him, and 100 villagers caught the plague and died. The survivors cried out to God for help, vowing that He if saved them from the plague, once every 10 years they would reenact the Passion Play of the agony and crucifixion of Christ. No further deaths occurred from the plague after their prayers, and the villagers have fulfilled their vow ever since.
The Passion Play takes place outdoors with scenic Germany as a back drop to this wonderful spectacle of pageantry. More than 2,000 citizens make up the actors, singers, instrumentalists, and stage technicians who perform for approximately six hours of playing time. The year of 2010 will mark the 41st time the Passion Play will be presented in Oberammergau, with performances running from May to October in 2010.
